The Immigration and Passport Department from the Government of Grenada has officially launched the e-Passport on Tuesday 17th July 2018. Being the 6th Caribbean country to introduce it, and following St. Kitts & Nevis, Barbados, Antigua & Barbuda, The Bahamas, St. Vincent and The Grenadines.

Prime Minister Dr Keith Mitchell and Her Excellency Governor General Dame Cecile La Grenade were the first to receive their e-Passports on Tuesday’s launch.

e-Passport Features

e-Passports are travel documents with some specific biometric features and radio frequency identification chip (RFID), which is embedded in the back cover of the travel document. It is anticipated that by the year 2023, all passports issued by the passport office in Grenada will be the machine-readable e-Passports.

The chip also contains biometric information that can be used to authenticate the identity of the passport holder. In fact, many countries are moving towards the issue of biometric passports. As of June 2017, 120 nations were issuing e-passports.

Grenada passport allows visa-free and visa-on-arrival travel to 120+ countries.

The Canadian Bank Note Company Limited played an essential role in the transition along with the government and an investment of US$3.5 million. This long-lasting relationship between the Government of Grenada and The Canadian Bank Note Company Limited started in 2001 when the Government became the first Caricom country to make the transition from handwritten to machine-readable passports.

“The border management solution that is taking place in Grenada is one of the most advanced and most recently deployed management solutions in Caricom, providing Grenadian citizens and passport holders with the most secure and best travel experience.”

This is not the only role we play here; we also play a role in supplying IT infrastructure for the National Lotteries Authority. But the launch of the new e-Passport Issuing Control System will mean an entirely new paperless process for the passport department as we move forward into 2020 and beyond” stated Alex Klein, Director of Business Development at Canadian Bank Note Company.

Klein said the new passport will have special features, including the representation of some of Grenada’s cultural heritage and sites. “The theme for the design was to showcase the natural beauty of the spice isle including both its people, the flora and fauna, architecture and other landmarks. But most importantly Grenada’s investment in security will result in enhancing the level of regards for your passports and travel documents on the international stage, for example, within the IKO community, INTERPOL, and other law enforcement bodies.”

“The print solution has been upgraded to now include chip encoding, and there will be much more secure quality passport images printed on the data page. This culminates into what we believe is a very stunning and innovative passport that Grenadians can carry with great pride.”
