Portugal is rapidly becoming an attractive destination for immigrants from all over the world, and it owes much of that interest to its prominent Golden Visa program; a residency by investment program that has awarded over ten thousand investors and their family members with Portuguese residency.
As the popularity of Portugal continues to increase, more people take a closer look at the other immigration programs in the EU, and the one that has caught most of the global attention is the Portuguese D7 visa.
The D7 visa (Passive Income Visa) is an affordable temporary residence card that allows anyone who can demonstrate financial self-sufficiency, either through stable, recurring income or through having a specific amount of savings, to reside in Portugal.

Designed specifically for foreigners, the D7 is an entry visa, valid for four months only and the residence card is issued for two years, renewable for the same period as long as the applicant continues to meet the requirements.
Once the applicant meets the physical residency and naturalization requirements, the D7 route leads to permanent residency and/or citizenship.
The D7 requires applicants to have a clean criminal background, obtain health insurance in Portugal, and prove their financial self-sufficiency. Successful applicants must also reside at least six months a year to renew their residence and to eventually apply for permanent residence and citizenship after five years.
The most straightforward route to proving financial independence comes from proving a stable income. Applicants who are nationals of the European Union Member States, the European Economic Area and Switzerland are not eligible to apply. Applicants only need to show a specific amount of stable, recurring income, which could be either passive or active, to obtain a D7 visa.

Income can take the form of stable employment, dividends, pensions, or otherwise, as long as it is stable, recurring, and can be obtained remotely while residing in Portugal.
This option makes the D7 excellent for digital nomads, entrepreneurs, passive shareholders, and retirees.

According to Portuguese law, the applicant must prove that they hold a minimum income. This minimum income varies according to the number of family members that compose the applicant’s household and should be transferred to their Portuguese bank account. Recurring income thresholds for the D7 are as shown below:
In terms of savings, the Portuguese government does have a route to apply for the D7 by providing proof of sufficient reserves which can cover an applicant’s living arrangements in Portugal for the validity of their residency permit.
Applicants will also need to prove they have secured long-term accommodation in Portugal, either through rent or by purchasing a house.

Once approved, applicants must reside at least 6 months consecutively or 8 months non-consecutively a year in order to maintain their residence status. This physical residence requirement will automatically situate applicants as tax residents, meaning they will need to pay taxes in Portugal.
However, D7 visa holders can apply for the Non-Habitual Resident Tax Scheme (NHR) to obtain a wide range of tax benefits and exemptions, allowing them to adopt a lenient tax regime.

The D7 visa is garnering massive interest from people around the globe, as its simplicity, accessibility, and quick processing times make it an excellent option for those looking to relocate to Portugal.
