The Caribbean nation of Dominica established diplomatic relations with Bangladesh at the end of 2020. The agreement will benefit both countries in different aspects of mutual interest.
Signed in New York by the Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to the United Nations, Rabab Fatima, along with Permanent Representative of Dominica to the United Nations, Loreen Ruth Bannis-Roberts, this agreement and the relations it has cultivated, are set to drive both countries towards greater prosperity and security.
This agreement facilitates the expansion of the export market and increases employment opportunities. It will also address several economic, political, social, cultural, scientific and humanitarian issues.
Both Dominica and Bangladesh are leaders in terms of climate change resilience. Bangladesh shares the vision to eliminate poverty and attain economic and social well-being for its citizens. This goal is set to be achieved through the country’s Climate Change Strategy.
Similarly, with a focus on climate resilience, Dominica has made great strides in recent years. Following a devastating hurricane in 2017, the country executed an action plan to ensure the Commonwealth of Dominica was well-prepared should another disaster strike the Caribbean island.
In March 2018, the Climate Resilience Execution Agency for Dominica (CREAD), funded by Canada, Dominica and the United Kingdom, was launched.
The 4-year mandate was aimed at driving the country towards becoming the world’s first climate-resilient nation. By developing and implementing a full Climate Resilience and Recovery Plan (CRRP) entailing large complex reconstruction efforts.
Dominica is becoming an increasingly sought-after destination for foreign investment as the country continues on its path of development and industrialisation in crucial areas such as healthcare, education, housing and infrastructure.
Investors find the Caribbean territory particularly attractive as Dominica passport provides visa-free and visa-on-arrival access to more than 140 countries.
Visa-free travel is the capability to visit a country without having to complete lengthy visa applications. Nationals of a country can travel visa-free to another country if the governments of both countries have signed a visa-waiver agreement to that effect, or if the receiving country unilaterally opened its borders.
