Philippines Launches New Digital Nomad Visa for Remote Workers

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has signed Executive Order No. 86, officially authorizing the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) to issue Digital Nomad Visas (DNVs) to foreign nationals engaged in remote work.

The new policy aims to attract international remote workers to the Philippines, boosting tourism, local economies, and remote commerce through a structured legal framework.

Under the program, eligible foreigners can enter the Philippines and stay for up to one year, with the option to renew.

This move reflects a growing global trend, as more countries create specialized visa pathways to welcome the expanding digital nomad community.

Pilot implementation of the DNV program is expected to begin within 60 days following the effectivity of the executive order.

Eligibility Requirements and Key Details of the Program

The executive order defines digital nomads as foreign travelers who engage in remote work for overseas employers or clients while temporarily residing in the Philippines.

Foreigners applying for the Digital Nomad Visa must meet the following conditions:

  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Present proof of remote work using digital technology
  • Show evidence of sufficient income generated outside the Philippines
  • Provide proof of a clean criminal record
  • Have valid health insurance for the intended duration of stay
  • Be a national of a country that offers DNVs to Filipinos and where the Philippines maintains a Foreign Service Post
  • Not pose a threat to the internal or external security of the Philippines
  • Not engage in employment within the Philippines

Holders of a valid Digital Nomad Visa may stay in the country for up to one year, with the option to apply for renewals.

The Philippines joins a growing list of destinations, including Bali, Thailand, and Portugal, that have formalized legal pathways for digital nomads.

Authorities have also emphasized the importance of managing potential challenges linked to a large influx of remote workers, such as pressure on infrastructure, rising living costs for local residents, and maintaining peace and order.
