Portugal Digital Nomad Visa Requirements

The Portugal Digital Nomad Visa is designed for remote workers who wish to live and work in Portugal. This visa allows digital nomads to reside in Portugal while working for an employer or as a freelancer with clients outside of Portugal. The program offers an initial stay of up to one year with options to apply for residency and potentially obtain permanent residency or citizenship after five years.

Main Applicant Requirements

  • 18+ years of age
  • Good health
  • No criminal record
  • Have NIF-number and Portuguese bank account
  • Proof of personal tax residence in Portugal (a 12-months rental agreement registered with the tax authority).
  • An employment contract from an employer based outside of Portugal.
  • Bank statements and payslips (or invoices) to prove your monthly income.
  • Pass the language test with a minimum of A2 level to qualify for citizenship.

Legal Basis

The Portugal Digital Nomad Visa program is based on Portuguese immigration laws that allow non-EU nationals to obtain residency through proof of sufficient income and remote work arrangements.

Costs of Portugal Digital Nomad Visa

The costs are as follows:
1) Income proof
You must provide income statements from the previous three months, which must be equal to or greater than four times the monthly minimum wage

Application Process For Portugal Digital Nomad Visa

The expected timeframe for the application process is 4 to 6 months. The initial stage of document collection can vary depending on the applicant’s ability to gather the necessary documents. The review stage is subject to the respective government schedule and can be impacted by factors which we, as authorised agents, have no control over.   • Step 1
    Savory & Partners will pre-screen your passport copy for government pre-approval. A down payment of the professional fees is required to open your application. The response is in 24-48 hours.
  • Step 2
    Make a down payment for professional fees and sign an engagement agreement with Savory & Partners to receive assistance throughout your application process.
  • Step 3
    Savory & Partners will help you obtain your NIF number and open a personal bank account in Portugal.
  • Step 4
    Submit your visa application to VFS, the Portuguese Embassy, or Consulate in your country of residence.
  • Step 5
    Once the visa is granted, travel to Portugal and make an appointment with SEF (Serviço de Estrangeiros e Fronteiras) for residency permits.
  • Step 6
    The residency card is initially granted for two years and renewed for three years, after which you can apply for permanent residency or citizenship if you meet the requirements.
