Canada plans to introduce two new permanent residency pathways in 2026 as part of a broader overhaul of its immigration system.
According to Canada Immigration News, the federal government is moving toward prioritising applicants who are already living and working in the country.
Canada is preparing to relaunch a transition pathway for temporary residents, with plans to grant permanent residence to 33,000 temporary work permit holders in 2026 and 2027.
The pathway is expected to focus on individuals who have established roots in Canada and are actively contributing to the economy through employment, taxes, and community ties.
A second initiative, formally announced in the 2025 federal budget, will create a dedicated permanent residency pathway for United States H-1B visa holders.
Government officials have indicated that the programme is expected to launch in the coming months, although detailed eligibility criteria and intake timelines have not yet been released.
Neither pathway has been fully launched.
Additional information on eligibility, intake dates, and application procedures is expected in 2026 as part of the government’s immigration planning cycle.
