Croatia Extends EU Blue Card Validity Period to Attract Skilled Workers from 2 to 4 Years

Recently announced, Croatia extends EU Blue Card validity to attract skilled workers. The card’s duration will increase from two years to four, marking a significant shift aimed at attracting and retaining highly qualified foreign professionals.

The EU Blue Card, designed for non-EU nationals, grants residency and employment rights within the EU, and Croatia’s move to double the validity will make the country more appealing to professionals seeking longer-term employment opportunities. This change aligns with the broader EU efforts to create more flexible and attractive conditions for top talent worldwide.

Eligibility Criteria for Croatia’s EU Blue Card

To be eligible for Croatia’s EU Blue Card, third-country nationals must hold a valid one-year employment contract in a highly qualified job. Additionally, applicants are required to meet a minimum salary threshold, set at 1.5 times the average annual salary in Croatia. For 2024, this translates to a minimum annual salary of €24,845.64. Applicants must also provide documentation proving they meet the legal requirements for regulated professions or provide proof of qualifications for unregulated professions. Furthermore, applicants need to demonstrate sufficient financial resources to support themselves and submit a copy of their travel document. The processing time for the EU Blue Card is between 30-60 days, and there is an initial fee of €74.32.

In addition to extending the Blue Card validity, Croatia aims to broaden eligibility by including IT professionals who may not possess formal qualifications but have substantial experience in the field. This approach reflects the growing demand for tech talent in Europe, recognising that practical expertise can be just as valuable as formal education. By enhancing the EU Blue Card program and simplifying some of its requirements, Croatia is positioning itself as an increasingly attractive destination for foreign professionals, with the goal of strengthening its workforce and contributing to its economy.
