Germany Updates EU Blue Card Salary Requirements for 2026

Germany has updated the minimum salary thresholds required for foreign professionals applying for an EU Blue Card in 2026.

Under the new thresholds, applicants in most occupations must earn a minimum gross annual salary of €50,700 to qualify. A lower threshold of €45,934.20 applies to eligible shortage occupations and certain other categories of applicants.

The EU Blue Card allows qualified professionals from non-EU countries to live and work in Germany, provided they meet the relevant employment, salary and qualification requirements.

Lower Threshold for Shortage Occupations

Professionals working in designated shortage occupations may qualify for an EU Blue Card with a gross annual salary of at least €45,934.20, subject to approval from Germany's Federal Employment Agency.

The shortage occupation category covers a range of professions where Germany faces demand for skilled workers, including roles across information technology, engineering, healthcare, education and other specialist fields.

The lower salary threshold may also apply to applicants who obtained their most recent university degree within the previous three years.

Experienced IT professionals may be eligible without a formal university degree in certain circumstances, provided they can demonstrate the required level of relevant professional experience and meet the applicable salary requirement.

Qualification and Employment Requirements

Meeting the salary threshold alone does not guarantee eligibility for an EU Blue Card.

Applicants generally need a German academic qualification or a recognised foreign qualification comparable to a German degree. Certain tertiary-level qualifications may also be accepted where they meet the required standards.

Applicants must also have a qualifying employment offer in Germany for at least six months. The position must correspond to the applicant's qualifications, while regulated professions may require the relevant professional licence or evidence that recognition is underway.
