In an 11-month period between May 2024 and March 2025, Hungary received over 1,800 applications for residence permits. The Ministry of the Interior reported that 1,442 of these requests were approved, while 259 were rejected.
Nationals from Turkey, Vietnam, China, and Iraq made up the majority of applicants, highlighting Hungary's appeal to third-country nationals looking for work opportunities within the European Union.
The rise in residence permit applications comes amidst a changing landscape for migration and immigration laws in Hungary. The new regulations and procedures introduced by the Ministry aim to streamline the process and ensure that applicants are aligned with the country’s social and cultural norms.
Hungary has implemented a new cultural knowledge exam requirement for applicants seeking permanent residency. The test requires applicants to demonstrate a basic understanding of Hungarian culture, language, and social coexistence norms.
Nationals from third countries wishing to hold a National Card or European Union Residence Card must pass the written exam, which consists of 12 questions on topics like Hungary’s history, traditions, and values.
This is part of Hungary’s broader immigration policy that places an emphasis on cultural integration for those seeking long-term residency. The move aims to ensure that individuals not only meet legal requirements but also have a foundational understanding of Hungarian society.
