Slovenia Implements Mandatory Language Test for Permanent Residency – Key Details Inside

Starting from November 1, Slovenia implements mandatory language test for permanent residency seekers. The country has introduced a new requirement mandating a basic level of Slovenian language proficiency for individuals seeking permanent residency.

This rule applies to all new applicants for permanent residence permits and to those applying to extend their permits on the basis of family reunification. The aim is to foster better integration of foreign nationals into Slovenian society, recognising language as a crucial tool for social and cultural assimilation.

The language requirement includes a basic Slovenian language knowledge test, which will be administered by educational institutions or organisations involved in informal adult education programs. The first attempt at the test is free of charge, and applicants who need additional language support will be offered a 180-hour free learning program.

According to the Slovenian Ministry of Interior, these language programs have already engaged over 2,500 participants this year, highlighting a strong interest and proactive approach from applicants in adapting to the new regulations.

Who is Exempted from the Mandatory Language Test?

Certain exemptions have been put in place to accommodate specific groups. Individuals who hold residence permits based on family reunification, where their family member holds an EU Blue Card, are not required to meet the language standard.

Additionally, the requirement is waived for family members of researchers working in Slovenia, as well as for those transferred within companies or engaged in research under residence permits from other EU countries. These exemptions ensure that Slovenia’s policy remains flexible and considerate of various personal and professional circumstances.
