Located in the Caribbean Basin, Dominica is an island lying between the French overseas territories of Guadeloupe and Martinique.
The country is a multiparty republic within the Commonwealth of Nations with the president as the head of state and the prime minister heading the government.
The country was the last Caribbean Island to be colonized by Europe.
Though the island gained its independence in 1978, it is still part of the British Commonwealth of Nations. The economy recovered shortly after receiving its autonomy when Mary Eugenia Charles, the first female prime minister in the Caribbean, replaced a tumultuous administration.
Dominica is a member of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS). To diversify the economy, the government encourages agriculture-derived exports including coconut oil and soap.
The country, known as “Nature Island”, due to its lush and varied flora and fauna is home to 365 rivers and streams - one for every day of the year.
Although Dominica is vulnerable to hurricanes, its weather is pleasantly topical almost all year-round.
Dominica is an island in the Caribbean Sea, located about halfway between the French islands of Guadeloupe (to the north) and Martinique (to the south).
